Remembering Florence Galbraith

In Loving Memory of Ms Florence Galbraith

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Ms Florence Galbraith, a much-loved and inspirational figure in the St George’s community.

Ms Galbraith joined the school in 1964, bringing with her a lifelong passion for music that touched the lives of countless pupils. She began by teaching solo singing and piano, and soon expanded her role to include Primary class music and Middle School choral work. Her enthusiasm and dedication helped foster a strong tradition of singing at St George’s, culminating in the creation of exceptional madrigal groups in the Senior School. These groups were regularly invited to perform at concerts both within the school and across Edinburgh, including the prestigious Music at Six series at St Giles’ Cathedral.

In 1987, Miss Galbraith returned to her roots in individual music teaching, then also offering clarsach lessons. Her contributions extended far beyond the music department — as an Upper Four form mistress and a member of the Health and Safety Committee, she was known for her calm efficiency and quiet organisation. Many school concerts ran seamlessly thanks to her behind-the-scenes diligence.

Even after retiring from full-time teaching, Ms Galbraith continued to share her musical gifts in a part-time capacity, remaining a cherished presence in the school community.

Her legacy is one of musical excellence and a deep love for nurturing young talent. She will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her funeral will take place on Wednesday 10th September at 2:30pm, at Warriston Crematorium.
