Are you passionate about girls’ education and committed to helping shape the future of our school? St George’s is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join our Board of Governors and is currently looking to strengthen our expertise in the areas of Finance, Marketing, Property/Estate Management and Development/Fundraising.
We have an exciting strategy to build on our excellent reputation, one which continues to treat each of our girls as individuals, supporting their personal growth, stimulating and enabling their interests, and delivering all-round education.
The Governing Board operates at a strategic level and is not involved in the day-to-day running of the school. They are responsible for both the conduct of the school and for the promotion of high standards. They carry out this role by setting the vision for the school, ensuring that the school works efficiently and effectively towards achieving its vision, and that the school provides a high quality education for its pupils. This is done by building a thorough knowledge of the school and its community, by both supporting and constructively challenging the school, and by ensuring accountability and compliance. Governors are essential for the effectiveness and success of the school and it is an extremely rewarding and fulfilling role.
Our governors come from a range of different backgrounds, skills and experience but all share a common interest of wanting the best possible education for the young people in our school. All school Governors serve a 4 year term with the option to extend at the end of this period.
We would be delighted to hear from anyone who:
Shares our passion for girls’ education and the growth and success of the school
Is committed to the school’s ethos and mission
Will make a meaningful impact on school policies and decisions
Is confident to challenge, ask questions and debate issues that affect the school and the wider independent sector
Will consider matters objectively and make informed judgements
Can help to set and review the school’s strategic direction and agree targets for improvement
Endeavours to hold the head and school’s leadership team to account for the educational performance of the school
Will scrutinise the financial performance of the school
Can collaborate with a dedicated team of professionals
What does the role offer?
A chance to develop your own personal skills
Access to training in respect of education/governance/safeguarding matters
A sense of achievement in making a difference to the future of our school and its young people
Support and guidance from fellow governors,
An insight into the wider perspective of the school
What is involved as a Governor:
to attend and contribute to termly meetings of the full Governing Board
to sit on a committee or working party which meets your interests, and attend all associated meetings
to visit the school formally for monitoring purposes and informally to get to know the school and your role
to provide ad-hoc professional advice from time to time
to commit to completing training courses as required
to comply with all Governor regulations and responsibilities
to act as a charity Trustee and company Director
These volunteer positions are open to parents, alumnae, former parents and the wider community. Co-opted governors are elected directly by the governing body.
If you are interested in helping to shape the future of girls’ education and our school, please email your CV and a short introduction statement to Fiona Duncanson, Business Director, fed@stge.org.uk.
