  • Years at St George's - 1974 - 1987
  • What subjects did you study and which ones did you enjoy the most? - Modern languages - French and German

  • What extra-curricular activities were you involved in? - lacrosse, hockey, singing and musicals (The Count of Luxembourg and Die Fledermaus)

  • Was there a particular teacher, mentor, or classmate who encouraged you to recognise your ambition or helped guide you towards your career path? - I think that the standard of teaching at St George's was excellent. Without fail, my French and German teachers were superb: Mrs Traynor, Mrs Mackie, Mrs Tate, Mr Dempsey, Mrs Williams and more.

  • What aspects of your time at St George's made the biggest impression on you? - Well I started school too young - I was 4 when I started in Primary 1 and I remember crying every morning in the wendy house! But having a year "in hand" at the other end (I was only 17 when I left St G's at the end of UVI and A levels) felt lucky and I enjoyed my year off working abroad before university. Die Fledermaus was a pretty exciting experience too, directed brilliantly by Mrs Traynor.

  • What did you pursue after leaving school? How did those choices influence your career path? -  I studied French and German at Cambridge university. I fancied a career in Europe but the civil service fast stream was uninterested in my talents (or character!) so I decided I needed a profession and was lucky enough to join Arthur Andersen, a - then - very progressive US accountancy and consultancy firm, which I absolutely loved and where I qualified as a charterered accountant. I had no desire to be an accountant but I wanted a means of proving my credibility in business. It was a really good decision as it gave me a channel along which to start my career before broadening out into general management, which was always my goal.

  • Could you describe your present position and the key duties you are responsible for? - I am the Chief Operating Officer of Bates Wells, the market-leading UK law firm for charities and purpose-driven organisations. We were the first B Corporation UK law firm and we balance making a profit with making a positive social and environmental impact. Together with the Managing Partner I run the business. I love every day at work, for which I am exceptionally grateful.

  • Outside of work, what brightens your day or brings you joy? -  run and enjoy pilates and the gym, walking in the mountains and skiing. Art definitely brings me joy and I will travel Europe to see an exhibiton or visit an art gallery; I also enjoy opera and music and most cultural offerings that London offers. My greatest joy is family and friends and I count several St G's friends in there!
